HUNGARIAN DRIED LAVENDER IN A DECORATIVE BAG

HUNGARIAN DRIED LAVENDER IN A DECORATIVE BAG

Lavender is called the “queen of fragrances”. And when it comes to conversation, many first of all remember Provence. But there are places where lavender lives, which in its qualities is not inferior to growing in France. One of these regions is the small Tihany Peninsula, located on the northern coast of Lake Balaton, Hungary. This peninsula is of volcanic origin and has several thermal springs on its territory.

In the 11th century, a Benedictine abbey was founded here. It is believed that the Benedictine monks brought lavender to Hungary. It is interesting that a certain monk is one of the main characters in the legend of the first known perfume made on an alcohol basis. Allegedly in the 14th century, he created a perfume known as the "Water of the Hungarian Queen" (Hungarian "Magyar Királyné Vize"). These perfumes, according to the most widespread version of the legend, were intended for Elizabeth of Poland (Hungarian Piast Erzsébet), the third wife of the Hungarian king Karl Robert (Hungarian Károly Róbert). According to another version, they were created much later, in the 17th century. By the way, the first mention of lavender in Hungary belongs to the same century.

They say that "Hungarian water" helped the already elderly queen, who survived her husband, to get back on her feet after a serious illness, and also returned her youth and beauty. Allegedly, the queen began to look so good that a young man even wooed her.

For a long time, "Water of the Hungarian Queen" was appreciated in Europe not only as a perfume, but also as a medicine. There were even men among her admirers. One of them is the French King Louis XIV, the Sun King.

The monks of the Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma were the first to grow lavender in Hungary. The Pannonian Hills (Hungarian Pannonhalma) are located in the northwest of the Tihany Peninsula, about 100 km from it. These places have been known since the days of the Roman Empire.
Pannonhalm Abbey, founded in the 10th century, is not only the oldest in Hungary, but also the second largest Catholic abbey in the world. It was here that lavender was brought in around 1687. As you know, monks have always grown medicinal plants in their monasteries. Pannonhalm Abbey also has its own botanical garden, which has a long history. Since the 18th century, lavender has been constantly cultivated here.
