INTRODUCTION TO OCTOBER

October has come - the second month of autumn. On 02.10.2017, pupils of grade 6 "B" got acquainted with the history of the origin of the name of the month, as well as with the names of "October" among different peoples.

Origin story

October (from the Latin word - October or octo, the eighth month of the year). In the Roman calendar, the year began in March, so October was the eighth month of the year. After the reform of Julius Caesar, he took his current, tenth, place, but the name has not changed.

In the calendar of the Slavs, October was called differently by different peoples, but all the names marked the changes taking place in nature at that time.

Old Slavonic name - "leaf fall" - the time of falling leaves from trees.

It is also called Oktyabr-Gryaznik. The month begins with a period of golden autumn. If in the first half of October the forest appears in all its glory of golden autumn, then from the second half of the month the leaves quickly fall off, rains begin to fall, and the ground becomes damp and dirty. That's the name of the month - Gryaznik.

The names of "October" by different peoples

Let's see how October was named among different peoples:

In Ukraine, it was much warmer, and the foliage was just beginning to turn yellow, so the month was nicknamed “zhovten” (because of the yellow color of the leaves).

Belarusian: castrychnik (from the word "fires", they burned processed products of flax, hemp, etc.).

Slovenian: vinotok (vinotok) - at this time wine was made

Czech: říjen (from rye)

Bulgarian: Ruen, Rui

Polish: październik "october" (from Polish paździerze - the same)

Lithuanian: spalis "October" (spalis with the same meaning).

Months in the Kalmyk calendar have the names of animals: October - Khulhna (mouse).

Turkish: Әkim

Kazakh: Қазан

Bashkir: karasai

Kyrgyz: toguzdun aiy
